3rd Metatarsal Pin Removed due to infection

I had surgery to place a pin into my 3rd metatarsal 1 month ago ( 4 weeks ) after returning from a trip i had a bit of pain, no redness and swelling. went to my Doctors office and he confirmed it was an infection and had to remove the pin. there is still a gap in between the two bone ( no union yet ) has anyone had a similar experience? doctors says to see him in three weeks but i am just curious if those two bones will fuse together. appreciate any feedback. thanks
