Hello, I'm seeking advice on the following issue that has begun to cause me considerable discomfort.
Over the past few weeks, I've developed pain and discomfort on the outside of my right foot, approximately half way between the ankle bone and the outer edge of the sole.
I first noticed the discomfort in the gym, after I was unable to achieve the required range of motion needed to perform a set of calf raises on the leg press machine.
Upon feeling the discomfort, I suspended all lower body gym activity for 7-10 days, on the assumption that the discomfort was due to a muscle strain.
However, since feeling the initial pain, the sense of discomfort has become worse, to the point that, at times I've also developed a dull aching sensation in my right heel and beneath the fourth and fifth metatarsals.
Since the onset of discomfort, I've continued to stretch my legs regularly, in an attempt to relieve the pain. However, the discomfort appears to be at it's worst when attempting to stretch the toes back-over towards the shin (dorsiflexion).
Finding the discomfort too painful, I've ceased any stretching exercises that involve dorsiflexion. Oddly enough, I'm able to touch my toes and perform hanging calf raises without any discomfort.
Having conducted some research into the anatomy of the lower leg and foot, my research led me towards a possible injury of the peroneus longus/brevis tendons, due to the location of the pain.
From memory, in recent weeks, the only incident that could have caused such an injury was stepping upon my pet's favourite ball. Although I did lose my balance momentarily, I cannot recall experiencing immediate pain.
Since the discomfort has become worse, particularly when attempting dorsiflexion, I've booked a consultation with a physio.
However, in the meantime, I'd be interested to hear about the courses of treatment, prescribed to others, who may suffered from an injury to the peroneus longis/brevis tendons should the physio confirm my suspicions.
