I am writing prematurely on behalf of my 87-yr-old mother. She is to meet with a surgeon regarding removing a 50+-yr-old callus on the bottom of her foot under the baby toe, which is finally bothering her enough to address. According to what little she can tell me so far, the procedure will involve shaving some bone off. I did some googling and came up with a possible surgery name of 5th metatarsal osteotomy. Based on that, and because she asked me to help, does anyone have any questions for me to send with her (she lives 600 miles from me...) to the surgeon? (NB to "Foot Doc"- I will be sharing with her the contents of your sticky post at the top of this ask-your-questions forum!)
If you are out there and have had this surgery, I would love to hear your recovery story, to tell her. She is a widow and lives alone, is physically and mentally active, walks 2 1/2 20-min miles every blessed day (in upstate New York, USA!!), still drives locally, and has a very active social/educational/church life. FWIW, she is a 17-yr breast cancer survivor, and is determined to use her time well. OTOH she seems to think that the doctor will read her mind and "take care of her". Problematic attitude in this day and age.
So, many thanks in advance for a) questions for surgeon, and/or b) recovery stories. chris
