Plantarflexed metarsal/metatarsalgia

dimanche 31 août 2014

Hi All,

New member here with a foot issue I'd like more info on:

I very rapidly got a case of a plantarflexed metatarsal (the toe left/right from the smallest toe). This also is a hammer toe.

Not sure how this happened, as I've not had this all my life (I'm 28/200ibs). Got custom orthotics to relieve the pressure, which works well. I got new shoes before the condition which were wide enough etc but caused immense burning pain in the insole, at first. Condition must have happened at this point (this was about 2 months ago). Also I wear gel socks and gel sleeves to relieve the pressure, and they do, but because they slide around and stuff, they sometimes means my foot doesn't remain equal on the surface and I have started to get ankle pain, which is a knock-on effect.

Anyway, with regards to this issue, what is the surgery to correct this? Is it a weil's osteotomy? And if so, is this effective? What's the recovery time?

Not diabetic, non drinker, non smoker. I am seeing my GP this week to get a referral to a specialist foot surgeon as my chiropodist can only provide pallative measures (like the insoles).
