Ingrown toenail problems

vendredi 6 février 2015

Hello all,

I have a problem with ingrown toenails on both of my big toes and the toe immediately next to it. I would greatly appreciate any advice you all can offer.

After a great amount of discomfort and pain I have managed to grow them out (a huge challenge I must admit, the temptation to trim the nails and stop the pain was difficult to resist), and they are no longer ingrown.

However, I think the cause of problem lies with my nail bed and not the way I've been trimming my toenails or wearing ill fitting shoes etc. The problem with my nail bed is if I were to trim my nail (the white bit) my nails would become ingrown again. My nail bed is an odd shape and the pink nail bit stops approximately half the way up the nail bed and the rest is the white nail part, that you would normally trim.

The difficulty I have is, aside from looking extremely unattractive and untidy, the shape means that there is often a bad fungus smell that comes from the affected nails. It's not a foot problem as none of my other toes have the bad smell, it's just the ingrown nails.

What are my options? Do I just have to live with it or will a nail removal fix it?

I would be happy to post pictures so people can get a better idea if needed (nothing gruesome, just the nail shape). But not sure how to do that.

Thanks
