I have a hampstead ceiling light fixture and there are 3 wires a black, white,3rd??

The 3 wires coming from the fixture I have connected the blk to blk what to what and I thought the oter was a ground so I connected it to the ground coming from the junction box there is also a red wire coming from junction box that was capped off. The light won't turn on. Any help would be appreciated.
